Hi guys, I'm new to the forums and while I've looked around if someone has
talked about this already I couldn't find anything so far, so I thought I'd
start a discussion myself.

I'm wondering about priorities and the effects of the different components that
are relevant to performance in a Nuke system. I'm not sure if I should start a
new topic for each kind of component, but as the discussion has potential to
become huge I'll just start asking about GFX cards. Maybe it would be an idea
for the Admins to create a Nuke User/Hardware subsection in the forum, to keep
info a bit more bundled? Just a thought.

Currently I have a NVidia Quadro FX 3400/4400 in my system, and I'm wondering
what the benefits of upgrading to either a Quadro 4000 or a GeForce 580 would
be, specifically when using Nuke.

Clearly, those cards are faster when it comes to Polygons and also there is
more memory, but most of the features in those cards benefit 3D applications
like Maya, Mari or Mudbox (or Games, of course). Clearly Nuke has a significant
3D component, but typically the geometry used in 3D compositing is nowhere
close to the complexity of a 3D scene in Maya.

So I'm wondering - does upgrading to one of these cards provide enough of a
benefit to justify the investment? And if so - where exactly should I expect to
see improvement.

And finally I'd appreciate your thoughts on which card to go for. I'm aware
that the Quadro series is supposed to be a better choice for 3D artists than
the GeForce cards, but how does that apply to us Nukers?
And one more question - in case the choice was between a Quadro 3400/4400,
which clearly is a bit dated, or a GeForce 580 - would you rather stick with
the Quadro or go with the GeForce, even though it's a GeForce, not a Quadro?
I'm asking mostly from the point of view of a Nuke user, but that last question
should probably also take things like Maya into account if possible.

Thanks so much, I'm very happy to finally see a forum like this come online, I
really find the mailing lists very inconvenient to follow, especially when
looking for a specific topic.

Cheers,
Constantin
