there are several pitfalls you have be aware of:

1) use linear light workflow all the way in 3d and comp
2) only use native vray materials (standard max materials dont work)
3) if some materials have selfillumination you would need this pass to

and maybe you could share a rendering with us, so we can look at it. (a cropped part would be enough)
