This has always been a little tricky in Nuke. Straight out of the box iDistort 
really doesn't do
a displacement distort like most people would expect. Instead it tends to 
translate/offset pixels in 
x and Y. it's more involved if you want something that looks like a a true 
displacement map to fake
things like ripple glass, heat distortion or lens distortion. 

Unfortunately I haven't done this in a while and can't remember exactly how we 
solved this issue.

That's not a particularly helpful answer, but at least it affirms your 
suspicion that something
isn't working as expected.

Let me see if I can find one of my old scripts.
