I just updated my local copy of the source to the most recent svn version and read the svn log for usbhid-ups.c. Seems there was something happening since last time. I will try out the svn version for a few days and see how that goes.
I have been running the new usbhid-ups driver on an Ellipse ASR 600 and an Evolution 650 in parallel for a couple of weeks now and the issue seems to be resolved. The problem is specific to the Ellipse series, the Evolution series is not affected. Since I used the latter for development, this problem didn't surface before.
