Thanks for this. So just so I'm clear - is the above sufficient
to stop all the problems we've been seeing (startd hung
and nis/client in maintenance)?

I don't think it will fix things on it's own - I was still seeing
nis/client in maintenance. For me that change in conjunction
with the addition of depenendencies on network/physical to
name-service-cache did prevent the startd hangs, but I still
had problems with nis/client.
