WRT question 2., the new Orinoco combo a/b card is the first new Orinoco
card since Proxim bought the division from Agere earlier this year. It does
not use the tried/tested/loved (Lucent/Agere) Hermes chipset. Instead it
uses an Atheros chip, which has got very good reviews so far for 802.11a,
but as of yet I haven't seen anything about what Atheros can do in 802.11b.

Also this combo card does not a connector for an external antenna (another
reason why the Orinoco cards are so loved).

Just a little caveat emptor, HTH.

Subject: [nycwireless] choosing a pc card

Hello all:

I am planning to purchase a wireless pc card for my vaio laptop. In
attending wed. meeting for the first time (which was very informative), I
gathered what most members use.

1. Has anyone experienced problems in using the orinoco 802.11b wireless pc
card gold or silver w/ their sony viao?

2. Is it worth buying the ORiNOCO 802.11a/b ComboCard at this time?

-Terrence
