However, I said it was the first "Event Marketing" use of Wi-Fi, which is more than merely providing free Wi-Fi Internet Access. What Yahoo! and sociableDESIGN did in this case was use Wi-Fi as a means to broadcast a marketing message, and engage the market at a specific physical location. We did provide free internet access, but that was secondary.
Also, sociableDESIGN's solution doesn't require a cable/dsl uplink. The Christmas Trees in Herald Square and in Chicago were put online within 20 minutes of sociableDESIGN's arrival, and only required that power be provided on site (this is something that we can even bring with us in the form of batteries).
