It's purely customer retention.

If somebody wants to get rid of the wired phone service in favor of wireless VoIP, they are going to do it (a lot already have) and when they did their DSL service went with it. There are a number of people I know both in and out of the city who have gone to the use of the cell phones exclusively. It's a trend that continues to gain steam and Verizon does NOT want these folks jumping ship to cable or satellite providers for their Internet access.

That's why Quest did it. That's why Verizon is doing it. That's why I'll bet that you will see the other baby bells following their lead in the near future.

Verizon Offering Naked DSL (to a few...)
Hello All,

This is interesting. The NY Times reported today

that Verizon is offering Naked DSL to existing DSL customers IF you live in the
Northeast, you move your existing telephone service to an internet based phone
vendor such as Vonage (???!!!???!!??)What? Yes, the article stated Vonage. I
almost dropped the paper. Is this a mistake? Why would Verizon want users to
switch over to a competitor? I don't get it unless Vonage or internet based
vendors are getting referral fees or this is some regulatory setup.... any
ideas?

-Ben
