Ok. You might be able to use wireless repeating mode (otherwise known as
WDS):
http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=231&p_created=1084206995&p_sid=LGBNYjHh&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MTc1JnBfcHJvZHM9MSwyMCwwJnBfY2F0cz0mcF9wdj0yLjIwOzMudTAmcF9jdj0mcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT1hbnN3ZXJzLnNlYXJjaF9ubCZwX3NjZl9sYW5nPTEmcF9wYWdlPTI*&p_li=&p_topview=1
Alternatively, if your WRT-54G does not support standalone repeating
(meaning not connected to a WAN connection), then you will have to put
OpenWRT onto one of your devices. OpenWRT can connect via WDS to the
other WRT-54G that is connected to your cable/dsl line, and the
ethernet ports on your OpenWRT loaded WRT-54G will work like they are
bridged with the wireless network. Unfortunately, its not the most easy
of processes to get OpenWRT installed and configured, however
NYCwireless is working on some better documentation for this.

Unfortunately I'm doing the second.
Looked at the docs on OpenWrt and felt my head was about to spin.
Not quite the tech I once was. Just have the equipment.

if all you want are 2 networks connected to each other via ethernet,
yes, the default WRT-54G will work just fine.
If you want to create a wireless bridge between 2 networks, you might
need to use the OpenWRT firmware to configure the second router.

thought I'd use second 54G as router for a network of wired

Robert,
The WRT-54G is very configurable, especially if you use OpenWRT as
your firmware. Can you provide a little more description of exactly
what you are trying to do?

Can I use use one as a gateway and the second as a wireless access
