This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of May 12, 2014 Highlights: ----------- EURASIAN WIGEON SWALLOW-TAILED KITE PEREGRINE FALCON WILLOW PTARMIGAN BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER RUDDY TURNSTONE WILSON’S PHALAROPE COMMON NIGHTHAWK PHILADELPHIA VIREO RED-HEADED WOODPECKER GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER LAWRENCE’S WARBLER CLAY-COLORED SPARROW ORCHARD ORIOLE Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 6/15: An ORCHARD ORIOLE and a FORSTER’S TERN were seen along the Wildlife Trail. One of the RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS was seen on Mays Point Road. 6/16: A GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was observed at the Audubon Center. 6/17: 2 Adult and 2 juvenile SANDHILL CRANES were spotted on Carncross Road along with BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER and AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER. An EURASIAN WIGEON was found on VanDyne Spoor Road in the marsh. 6/19: 2 WILSON’S PHALAROPES were reported at the Visitor’s Center. Derby Hill ------------ The HAWK flight has just come to an end but there was excitement this week. On the 14th. a SWALLOW-TAILED KITE was seen. Other good birds seen this week were ORCHARD ORIOLE, COMMON NIGHTHAWK and CLAY-COLORED SPARROW. Oswego County ------------ 6/12: A LAWRENCE’S WARBLER was found at Great Bear Recreation area north of Phoenix. 6/13: FOS BRANT were seen at Phillips Point on Oneida Lake. 6/17: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was found at Sunset Bay Park. Oneida County ------------ 6/13: The nesting PEREGRINE FALCONS in downtown Utica now have 4 eggs in the nest. Onondaga County ------------ 6/13: 2 PHILADELPHIA VIREOS were see at Green Lakes State Park in the Rolling Hills area. 6/14: A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was seen at Green Lakes State Park along the road to Rolling Hills camping area. It was seen and heard through the 18th. 6/16: 3 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS were seen on Van Rensselear Street in the Inner Harbor area. 6/17: A RUDDY TURNSTONE was seen at the same Van Rensselear location in a ball field. Jefferson County ------------ 6/16: The WILLOW PTARMIGAN is again being seen on South Shore Extension on Point Peninsula.
