Greetings. This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of 
May 19, 2014
 
Highlights:

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)
------------

     5/25: 9 species of Shorebirds including a WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER were seen 
on a
Armitage Road just before the forested area.


Derby Hill
------------

     A very slow week Hawk wise with only 372 birds tallied. On 5/20 an ORCHARD 
ORIOLE and a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER were seen


Oswego County
------------

     5/21: 71 WHIMBRELS were seen flying past Phillips Point on Oneida Lake. 23 
COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were counted at Derby Hill. A LEAST BITTERN continues to call 
at Sage Creek Marsh.
     5/22: 1920 BRANT were counted flying past Phillips Point.
     5/23: 15 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen at Derby Hill. An ORCHARD ORIOLE was 
also present.
     5/24: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was found at Sunset Bay Park. 6 more COMMON 
NIGHTHAWKS were counted at Derby Hill.
     5/25: 2 WHIP-POOR-WILLS were heard on Lilly Marsh road near Co. Rt. 51 
south of Rt. 104.
     5/26: A large flight of Shorebirds was ween from Mill Street in Constantia 
looking south at Oneida Lake. RUDY TURNSTONE, RED KNOT, DUNLIN, BLACK-BELLIED 
PLOVER and SANDERLING were indentified.


Onondaga County
------------

     5/20: 3 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen at Three Rivers WMA north of 
Baldwinsville. another was see on E. Dead Creek Road west of Balswinsville. 
     5/25: 2 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen from the overlook at Beaver Lake 
Nature Center west of Baldwinsville. A SNOWY OWL was seen on Rt. 31 just east 
of Moyer’s Corners.
     5/26: Another SNOWY OWL was seen, this time on Rt. 690 at the intersection 
of Van Buren Road in Baldwinsville.


Oneida County
------------

     5/24: A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen at Verona Beach State Park.
     5/26: A pair of ORCHARD ORIOLES was seen near Augusta Center.


Herkimer County
------------

     An UPLAND SANDPIPER was seen on Harris Road near Poland.


Jefferson County
------------

     Word has come that the WILLOW PTARMIGAN was found deceased this week.
