This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of March 30, 2020 Highlights: ----------- RED-THROATED LOON RED-NECKED GREBE WHITE PELICAN GREAT EGRET AMERICAN BITTERN EURASIAN WIGEON SURF SCOTER BLACK VULTURE GOLDEN EAGLE BONAPARTE’S GULL DUNLIN GREATER YELLOWLEGS LESSER YELLOWLEGS LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL ICELAND GULL GLAUCOUS GULL RED-HEADED WOODPECKER BARN SWALLOW MARSH WREN EASTERN TOWHEE FOX SPARROW LARK SPARROW VESPER SPARROW Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 3/30: A MARSH WREN and a PEREGRINE FALCON were noted near the Visitor’s Center. 3/31: The 2 WHITE PELICANS were again seen at the north end of Cayuga Lake near Mud Lock but in Seneca County. An EURASIAN WIGEON was seen from VanDyne Spoor Road. 4/3: An EURASIAN WIGEON was seen at Tschache Pool. A LESSER YELLOWLEGS was seen on the Wildlife Drive. 4/4: A MARSH WREN was heard at Carncross Road. An AMERICAN BITTERN and a GREATER YELLOWLEGS were seen on the Wildlife Drive. 4/5: A DUNLIN was found at the Visitor’s Center. A SANDHILL CRANE was seen in the Martville area. 4/6: A GREAT EGRET was seen from East Road. Onondaga county ------------ 3/31: A RED-THROATED LOON was seen from the West Shore Trail of Onondaga Lake. 4/2: A MARSH WREN was heard at the Dewitt Marsh. 4/3: A BARN SWALLOW wa seen with Tree Swallows over the Seneca river in Balswinsville. 5/5: At the Liverool Marina on Onondaga Lake a CASPIAN TERN, a number of RED-NECKED GREBES, a number of BONAPARTE’S GULLS and a pair of SURF SCOTERS were seen. A FOX SPARROW and an EASTERN TOWHEE were seen at Three Rivers WMA north of Baldwinsville. Derby Hill Bird Observatory ------------ Numbers were up this week at Derby but it was 95 per cent TURKEY VULTURES. The final count for the week was 16,682 raptors. Only one GOLDEN EAGLE was seen on 4/2. Other highlights were 7 SANDHILL CRANES, a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER and an EASTERN TOWHEE. Oswego County ------------ The LARK SPARROW continues!!! This bird has been coming to a feeding area on Hinman Road north of Pulaski and today marks day 91. 4/5: A SANDHILL CRANE was seen near Co. Rt. 54 in Palermo. 21 BONAPARTE’S GULLS were seen on Oneida Lake from Constantia. A VESPER SPARROW was seen near the Mosquito Station at Three Mile Bay on Oneida Lake. 15 species of waterfowl and 9 RED-NECKED GREBES were seen at Phillips Point on Oneida Lake. Cayuga County ------------ 3/30: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continues near the lower level cabins at Fair Haven State Park. 4/2: A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen near Martville. Madison County ------------ 3/31: A PECTORAL SANDPIPER was seen at Ditchbank Road north of Canastota. 4/1: A BLACK VULTURE was seen from Ditchbank Road. 4/2: 4 BLUE-WINGED TEAL were seen at the Great Swamp Conservancy north of Canastota. 4/5: 3 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, an ICELAND GULL, a GLAUCOUS GULL and a PECTORAL SANDPIPER were all reported from Ditchbank Road. 2 RED-NECKED GREBES were seen at Woodman Pond north of Hamilton. Oneida County ------------ 4/1: A PECTORAL SANDPIPER was seen on North Gage Road near Poland. 4/4: 2 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS continue at Verona Beach State Park on Oneida Lake.
