Thanks for clarifying.
IN the past I *have* written cover letters, but I'm finding them of
such low quality when I read them that it just doesn't seem worth the
applicants time.

In my experience cover letters seem more of a tool for recruitment
snakes, sorry *consultants* to fill out their personality profiles
without ever actually meeting you.

I take the client work think into account, but few people clearly
outline the requirements so it makes them look bad when the code is
bad (or just awful)

Also, when the code on your own personal site is bad (or your site is
broken) - that's not a good look at all

Perhaps I should add Point #7 for employers:
"If your company wants to employ Superman/woman, make sure they can
pay his / her salary"
