Hmmm.  To provide a better answer to your specific question I use:

2pm NZT / 8pm EST

Clients always know their own timezone. 

When-ever I'm sending emails I always be sure to specify what time I'm
referring to:

"I'll get to that task tomorrow morning at 9am (my time)" 

...or...

"Are you free to meet tomorrow at 5pm (your time - EST)?". 

I've discovered a lot of Americans have trouble converting their local
times to NZT which sometimes resulted in phone calls in the middle of
the night (arrrgh).  

So now I'm always very specific and have had no problems since I started
that.
