I'm yet to come across one that doesn't have a proper callback system as
you describe. Do they still make payment gateways that actually rely on
the browser redirect?
DPS, Eway, SecurePaytech definitely have callbacks with their hosted
implementations.
On that note, I use SecurePaytech for 2 busyish sites and have had
virtually no problems over several years of operation. Their monthly
charge is less than DPS ($10pm for the basic plan + whatever the bank
charges) so it's a good choice for sites that process under 50 or so
transactions a month and don't want to use Paypal for whatever reason.

yet? I've found it pretty painful working with hosted payment systems
that rely on the customer's browser being redirected back to your site
with a token.
