Jackrabbit 2.x uses the same approach, so this design is not a regression. If 
we do need more scalability here (do we?), I would track that as a separate 
improvement issue.

PS. Note that the SegmentMK data structures would allow us to do O(log n) 
updates to MV properties if desired. So far there hasn't been a need (and the 
other backends don't support that), so that feature is not accessible from the 
rest of Oak.
