Hi folks - this might answer your questions - Kevin Cooper is an
aerodynamicist at NRC's Institute for Aerospace Research. Incidentally, we
(IAR) are having an open house this weekend, free to all Canadians. Visit
the Montreal Road facilities (West of intersection of Blair and Montreal
Road) on Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm, and the wind tunnels (BIG!!!) at the
Uplands Facilities on Sunday, same hours. You will be able to actually walk
through the 9m x 9m wind tunnel, see an F-18 model at the tri-sonic tunnel,
learn about the research done here and ask questions of the researchers.

Hope to see OBC members there :)

Hello Nadia,

I do not have a definitive answer. In the past, I have made wind tunnel
tests on helmets and the streamlined ones offer a small drag reduction.
However, the opposing issue was always head cooling. The streamlined
helmets may not ventilate as well as regular helmets, and clearly not as
well as no helmet, so riders may forgo the small drag reduction for the
better cooling. Since such a large volume of blood goes to the head, lack
of head cooling may impair performance more than the small drag reduction
aids performance. It is probably a close call made by individual riders,
explaining the lack of consistency even on one team.

I hope this opinion is helpful.

Kevin Cooper.

Hi there, Vinh Nguyen mentioned that you might be able to help these folks.

Cheers,

Any aerodynamicists, TT specialists out there who might have some
answers to what (I thought) was an unusual occurance in today's
Tour de France Team Time Trial?
I would have assumed that wind tunnel tests would have confirmed
the usefullness or not of hard shell aerodynamic helmets for TT's
on predominantly flat ground courses. (I assume they must have a
limited advantage on mtn. TTs). Yet today we saw some riders with
bare heads, others with bandanas, still others with the usual bike
cap, plus the hard shell helmet in both aero and non-aero styles.
This was seen even within the same team.
