One death that did occur in Ottawa earlier this year was that of a teenage boy with
no helmet on doing an off road mountain bike stunt and he ended up landing on his
head. Risk taking behaviour is highest among 12-15 year old boys. Demographically,
there are more 12-15 year old boys now than there have been a few years. Many do
not have the experience or judgement skills and often try things beyond their
ability. Again while many have helmets purchased for them, they do not wear them.
As a teacher I have seen this over and over outside of schools and in the
neighbourhoods. Something to do with teenage attitude towards invicibility.
