Believe it or not, this was my first ever Tuesday Night ride. I was very
impressed by the cohesion of the group of 12 that I led. Most of them had
ridden together on Tuesday rides before. I don't think I had ridden with
any of them before. They are a convivial lot and it was the first tour
where we had a smoke stop rather than a snack stop. That didn't stop them
from maintaining a brisk pace however, mostly over 30km/h. So as not to
break with a tour leading tradition of mine, I missed the Parkway turn
while heading south on RR 27 and ended up in Metcalfe, adding another 12km
- 15km to the trip. By the time we got back to Billings Bridge the sun had
been long gone down and we had needed Pat's powerful front light in the
dark to steer us around the potholes. The glow from Mike Apsey's cigarette
just didn't cut it. Since he had the brightest red tail light he was promptly
dispatched to the back to ride shotgun.
Tuesday night group rides with "Sir James" are a nice mid week alternative
for anyone looking for fun and to practise their group riding skills.
Try one soon, but don't forget to bring lights, just in case you get led
astray by those who should know better!
