Thanks for the concern - but I've tried what you have suggested many times 
without success.

I don't mind reinstalling - I've installed a lot of filth since the last 
re-install, trying out various things - so it would be the easiest way to 
clean it up - and do a fresh compile of everything.  It's only a practice 
server anyway :-)
