Last Christmas my friends gave me a scrolling LED sign that you
typically find scrolling crappy trivia at the post office.
After some tinkering, I hooked up the stereo computer in my living room
to listen to the RTP titlestream and then program the sign with
songtitles and other news quips on each song change.

The result can be seen here:

Of course, its hard to capture a scrolling sign with a still camera. And
never mind the fence in the background. Let's just say that I have an
interesting living room. :-)

The sign software includes a few scripts which will download RSS feeds
and Yahoo news off the net and insert them into a MySql database. The
script that programs the sign on a song change then randomly picks news
items out the database and mixes them up with the titlestream, fortunes,
random math problems and other cute things.

In all, the sign script will do following things:

   - Show titlestream info
   - Download and display Yahoo news and RSS feeds.
   - Display network ping statistic (we've been having some
connectivity problems at home and this was a good way
to keep track of network stats)
   - Support for a countdown timer (currently counting the days
     until I leave for vacation)
   - Dada support -- dada is a program that randomly makes up
     reasonable sounding english sentences.
   - Display fortunes from the UNIX fortune database.
   - Show random basic arithetic math problems and solutions.

Lots of people hang out in my living room, and they are all trained to
use Obs, but its not always convenient to jump up and log in to find out
what song is currently playing. Now, there are no more questions.

Well, there is one question: If I package up this crazy bunch of
scripts, would anyone actually be interested in using them?
