Hi All, I left Helen-of-Obs just outside the operating theatre at the Vincent Pallotti Hospital today at a few minutes to 2 p.m. As spunky as ever and seemingly unafraid.
Surgery was due to begin at 2 p.m. And the operation on the lower vertebrae of her spine (which is/was "unstable") will last anything from 3 to 5 hours says her Anaesthetist. So she should come out theatre between 5 and 7 p.m. today. After which, she goes into High Care for approximately 24 hours. She is having a spinal implant (three pairs of screws!), decompression and fusion. I understand it will be best not to visit her until Friday, 19 March, when you will find her somewhere in the PROTEA Ward. It's thought she'll be in hospital for about a week. After which she is likely to be out of action for about 3 to 4 months. She sends her love to everyone............very especially Lucy ! Her Anaesthetist said he'd phone me, if possible, once she was out of theatre to let me know how she was doing. HERE'S RAISING A GLASS TO YOU HELEN !!!
