Dear Octave developers, first, let me thank you for your great piece of software.
Since octave has been lacking functions for basic reading and writing of FITS files (Flexible Image Transport System) which are often used in astronomy, I wrote some code (based on the cfitsio library, <http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/software/fitsio/>) which provides these features for octave. I think it is already usable for others, so I'd like to share it. If you like it, please upload it to the repository, and add me as developer (sourceforge name "dreisamrd"). The directory tree should be compliant with package structure policy, so that 'pkg install "fits.tar.gz"' should be ok, once you have libcfitsio3-dev installed. Thanks, Dirk
