Yes, I think "word" is GNU make specific.  I had not thought of that.

On the other hand, I think "shell" is gnu make specific as well.

I use BSD make rather a lot, and it is so incompatible with gmake that 
only the most basic makefiles work with both versions of make.  Adding 
gmake as a build dependency to FreeBSD ports is very, very common.

I have no idea about what sunOS or MacOS etc use.
