I had another look at this tonight, and I don't think the Gift Certificate is ready for general use as a product saleable through a variety of channels. Here's some observations that may or may not be correct:

1. The GC services rely on the recipient having an email address. This is no good if you want to sell a GC in-store and provide the purchaser with a physical certificate that can be redeemed later.

2. Other than the email in (1), there doesn't seem to be a way for staff to look at the details of the GC (eg, the GC # and remaining value)

3. The GC email tells the user the exTax value of the certificate (yes, I know this is only relevant in VAT/GST countries)

4. I'm sure this is jsut user error, but I couldn't figure out how to accept a payment from a GC. I assume that the end-user has an ecommerce screen to pay with the GC but since I don't use the ecommerce features of OFBiz (yet) I couldn't test that. Either way, accepting a GC payment in either Order Manager or POS seemed to be out of the question.

5. I didn't look too closely since 1-4 were real show-stoppers, but it's not clear that the accounts are getting updated properly.

Anyone else interested in having GCs that work outside a pure ecommerce environment?

Cheers, Iain

Mmm... perhaps I'm not clear : users are here of course admin, etc.

         Issue Type: Bug
         Components: accounting
           Reporter: Iain Fogg

Apologies in advance if this is user error and not a bug.
If I create a Sales Order for a gift certificate (basically using the Demo Seed
Data) I think the finaccount is being created but I'm confused about the
use-model.
If I look in the FinAccount table, I can see several GIFTCERT_ACCOUNTs. None of them have a finAccountName, but they all have a finAccountCode which looks like the output of a toString or something similar. With the Demo Data config, ought I be seeing a 12 alphanum account id somewhere in that table? In the case where I am selling the GC to a customer (say on the phone), should I be able to get the account id from somewhere in the UI to inform the customer, and/or to print out on some official looking store card for later redemption. Or.......
Is the current implementation only intended for pure electronic use? A slight
bummer if this is the base.
Also, where can I see the balance on a fin_account? I can see transactions in
the GL, but I'm having a heck of a time finding where (if at all) I can
view/update fin_accounts.
Again, apologies if this is inappropriate use of Jira, but from my naive
perspective this looks like a bug, but I recognise it could be either
deliberate design, or a stupid user :-)
Cheers, Iain
