I generally delete win.com, command.com, io.sys, msdos.sys, and if that
doesn't work System.dat, system.da0, user.dat, user.da0. However, if you
delete system.dat and user.dat, your registry is gone. Try the others first.

The exact files seem to change for different type of install.
If you leave system and user.dat, you may need to use the original
registration key and your CD may not be the one that the manufacturer used
:-(

Good luck.

Dave.

Subject: [DUG-OFFTOPIC]: Win98 re-install

I have created a nasty case of DLL hell on my home computer when I
uninstalled IE5, (IE5 & my original Win98 set-up killed each other).

Re-installing IE5 might fix it, but I don't have an install set on the
computer anymore & can't connect to the net to d/l it.

I tried to re-install the entire Win98, but the Win98 CD, (standard OEM
version which came with the machine), won't install as it detects something
on the C drive - it tells me it is designed for OEM installs & I need the
upgrade version. I have done re-installs before no problems with Win95 so I
guess it is new & 'improved' MS copy protection getting in the way (rather
wish they would fix some of the stupid bugs in Win98/IE 5 I have noted while
fighting with my machine over the weekend).

Any ideas on what the Win98 looks for on the drive? I have tried moving
everything out of the root & renaming the windows directory - do I have to
re-format the drive for the install to work? (arrrgh - not another machine
re-build)...
