Wingate is a pin because each client must be configured to use the proxy. I
use and have just passed the 70-087 exam Proxy Server.

If you are running a Windows based Client you just install the WinSock
Client, which redirects all winsock requests automatically to the proxy.

But I assume there is some BIG $ involved, I have a MSDN copy so no money at
this end.

Wingate we use to use, but not everything supports a proxy, hence some
softwar just won't work.

The other one WinRoute I have never used.

But NAT is really the way to got, there is NAT software for the PC, but you
do have to pay $ for it. You could also try Windows 98 SE, it includes a NAT
type of sharing.. But there are problems, PCANYwhere does not work, ICQ
direct contact does not work, but most things do.

Short answer: Linux with NAT/MASQ. Its free, its stable as hell, and you
dont have to conifure ANY clients - just tell them that the machine is their
default gateway, and your away - and it works with almost all client apps
(ICQ, RealAudio etc etc etc).

I have a machine at home that dials on demand (using diald), and Masquarads
for 3 people. I have to reset the modem now and again, but thats cos we have
a crap modem that doesn't like our ISP too much.

I also have a machine here with it. The setup is about 10 commands in the
/etc/rc.d/rc.local file (ie, autoexec)

WinGate is OK-ish - they use it at work for 150+ people. You have to setup
proxies, tho, which adds all sorts of fun. Dunno about WinRoute.
