Have used F-Prot AV (low overhead). Tried also Norton and Eset Nod-32. Nod-32 looked to be by far the best AV program, expensive but low overhead (I think its written in assembler).
Avast and AVG also seem good enough... Avast is a bit of a CPU hog. Firewalls - tried: ZoneAlarm - excellent until it locked up after a few months after an update and uninstalling and reinstalling could not fix it. Kerio v2.15 (an old version) which gets good press for being low overhead and low memory footprint. Eventually seemed to cause email time-outs with a new router. Commodo - Excellent. Free for commercial use. Gets better reviews than all the paid for ones too. Low memory and cpu overhead. With some of these you can leave the Windows Firewall on too (XP anyway). Can't be too safe eh!
