myOffice Email MessageHD image means I did a hard disk complete image, in case
it went to custard and I could then just return the computer to as it was on
Vista.
(In my case I used Drive snapshot

which I have used for many years over various OS - always done what I need, and
cheaper than Acronis which usually gets the best reviews. Norton Ghost is much
the same thing.)
Summary of upgrade:
-I would have preferred to go to 64bit Windows 7 (benchmarks show 64 bit is
generally a bit faster on the same hardware), but it means a reinstall of
everything and some things that came with the laptop would have been lost. So
I took the lazy upgrade path which means everything should reappear in Windows
7.
-Upgrade took 7 hours. between starting upgrade and next step (entering
licence). Most of that was scanning all files and working what it needed to
import, and importing programs and settings.....it said there were 800,000
settings/programs etc to import. Considering setting up the last laptop took
20+ hours of installing everything this was acceptable. I did not bother
cleaning up all the stuff I had installed, just left it there.
-At the end of that everything is present. Imported Windows Mail into Windows
Live Mail - it pretty much did that automatically too.
-So far everything working, most things are definitely faster, and everything
runs.
-Even areas I might have expected problems - eg BDE appeared in the control
panel and runs, the Firebird service is already running.
-D2007 works fine - in fact faster and cleaner. On Vista used to get windows
moving around on the screen when a project opened, as it figured out where the
docking windows went, same on running a program as the window setup alters for
the debug setup. On Windows 7, it all paints cleanly and does not flicker
around the screen, so maybe that was a Vista/Windows problem that cleaned up in
Windows 7.
(The first time I tried a compile I got worried as the compile window appeared,
froze and the title changed to "Compile (not responding)". Then after my
heart sank suddenly the window unfroze and the program launched, much quicker
than I expected under Vista - since then its been behaving normally).
-Windows Live Mail looks to be similar but better than Windows Mail (Vista).
-So far only things missing are:
-No list of wireless networks past used.
-no sent email - it does not import that. Because Windows Mail is not on
Windows 7, I can't get to look at my past "sent items" folder. I am hoping I
won't need to.....
-I noticed there is a difference with Windows 7 and Delphi program icons in the
task bar - one of my programs taskbar icon used to change programmatically to
reflect its state, and no longer does. I might ask about that on the Delphi
list.
-As a summary of how the PC is performing, I am currently running much of the
grunty stuff I have all at once:
-D2007, large-ish project open,
-Firefox 3.7 148 tabs
-Chrome 2 tabs
-VMWare workstation 6 with XP virtual machine running
-Open Office Write and Calc docs open
-Mail and a few others too.
CPU running at around 5%, and memory for all the above is between 2.0 and 2.2GB
(I have 4GB installed). (Mind you I have a an extension (Bartab) applied to
Firefox to keep the CPU low on inactive tabs- normally Flash somewhere in many
of the tabs would be eating much more CPU).
So far I am pretty happy!
