And possibly what resolution you want on that screen - if you have a choice
which you probably don't.

I had a standard 15" screen on my previous Dell laptop but was unable to get
a 1024 x 768 panel for it. So I had a 1600 x 1200 panel. I found the pixels
too small at native resolution and ended up just running it at 1024 x 768
and putting up with everything being slightly blurry. At least having that
many pixels meant that it did a reasonable approximation of the lower
resolution but it was still far from ideal.

That's why I bought an HP this time after buying Dells for all my previous
laptops. HP would give me a 1024 x 768 15" standard panel (and give me a
discount for it!) on a top of a line laptop while Dell wouldn't give me that
screen on any laptop (and the closest they had was a 14.1" standard screen
which was only available on some pitifully slow laptop). The HP has given me
more problems but at least it is clear to look at!

I think someone else said it and it is good advice - go into Harvey Normans
or Noel Leemings and have a look at laptops with the same screen size and
pixel resolution as you are thinking of buying.

David.

Yes you are correct - and your rant is appreciated ;-)

If you excuse me working in inches:
a standard 15 inch display is 12x9 inches for a screen area of 108 sq inches

a wide 15.4 inch display is 13.44 x 7.56 inches with a screen area of
101.6 sq inches

This makes a standard 15 inch display 6% bigger (by area) than a 15.4
inch widescreen display.

A wide 17 inch display is 14.8 x 8.3 giving an area of 122.8 sq inches

Feel free to correct me - my math is usually rather poor (a side effect
of having a degree in mathematics)

So I guess the debate is between a 15 inch 4x3 ratio screen and a 17
inch 16x9 ratio screen.
