Personally, I'd much prefer two regular 19" LCDs over a
widescreen, especially with the use of UltraMon (www.ultramon.com) to handle things like
multiple taskbars.
With
two individual monitors, you can maximise individual apps to a specific screen,
which presumably you can't do on a single widescreen
monitor.
Not
sure about the CAD stuff, I'm afraid, although presumably a
widescreen supports different ratios (e.g. 2000 x 768 or something) to a
regular monitor, so I would assume that your CAD applications would be fine on a
widescreen, since each individual pixel would still be the same size as on a
regular monitor; you'd just have more screen real estate.

I need to purchase a new PC and it's been suggested that
I choose a widescreen monitor as being the best option but I'm not so sure. I
have an LCD projector in my home theatre (so I don't need a screen to
watch multimedia on my PC) however it has a native 16:9 format which isn't
always the best.
Changing the format is a pain, I have
to change the projector's settings and slide it towards the screen for 3 x 4 viewing so I don't bother. As a
result, for TV viewing, footballers look chubby like a rugby ball on its
side.
Q1 Will this be a disadvantage with a
widescreen monitor? Will my CAD applications draw squashed circles or can
I set them up to maintain the correct ratios?
Q2 Will I lose room heightwise and
hence have to reduce the vertical picture size?
Q3 I will probably gain (spare) space
horizontally but is this going to be distracting or can it be put to use by
better arranging the desktop, or even allowing room to put an application's
menus and toolbars?
Q4 I have a considerable investment in
CAD applications which I don't want to have to replace for the sake of a new
monitor so should I go for it.
Recommendations please.
