As someone who also lives in the US and pays close attention to politics, I
have the same dislike for that term.

Here are some thoughts:

* The most accurate terms IMO would be "micro-community" to replace SIGs
  and macro-community to refer to OpenSolaris in the large.  These terms
  are somewhat clumsy though for everyday use.
* We already have user-groups.  Most communities/SIGs that don't fall into
  the user-group bucket seem to be technology related.  In other words, it
  seems to be generally true (though not completely true) that the thing
  that ties each group together is a common interest in a particular
  technology.  Therefore I wonder if "technology groups" (or perhaps
  "tech groups" for short) might be a helpful term?
