You must live in a protected world... It has been my experience (both as a manager and as a managee) that having an open dialog in the first place is a requirement. *How* would I know whether or not an employee wanted a promotion without first talking to them about their career goals in a one-on-one discussion? I work with many people who are happy where they are, and would be upset if they were to be promoted without their active involvement in the process. Going back to what I said, and the context where I said it, it is clear that the community has not proactively made Shawn a core contributer, and my advice for him to simply ask them to promote him is entirely reasonable. On the other hand, pontificating about desired CG proactivism without doing anything to *actually fix* the problem is (IMnshO) just a waste of everyone's time. -John
