Not really - when the ARCs are aware of multiple efforts in the same area,
they generally try to force the multiple parties together before any of
them get to commitment - this is one of those problems that is much easier
to resolve earlier rather than later...

Granted - but one *can* and *should* ask whether there is work in
progress in an area where the symptoms point out that there indeed
is something being done. James and Alan both have referenced efforts
in progress; that is enough for me to move this from being one of
those "unknowable future possibilities" into "a definite probability".

It is all about using good judgment.

Given that we have some warning (the crystal ball really is lighting
up), it behooves us to do at least one pass of followup. Of course,
if Sun's/LSI's response is "duuh, maybe, sortof, we might someday
think about...", then we're done - and mfi should get a green light.

The failure mode here is that our left hand isn't talking too well
with our right hand, and that the LSI stuff might be more concrete
than it appears. We don't know any of the FACTs about the Sun/LSI
effort; all I'm saying is to make an attempt to get the other
perspective.

Ready, fire, aim?

The timeframe for asking this question and getting an answer
should be on the order of a week - what's the rush?

Hi Al, please go off and coordinate with David and [TBD at LSI] to ensure
that all of your efforts are aligned and that you are not duplicating
efforts. Which ever of you three comes to ARC first will be required
to show that you are in fact collaborating with each other at an
architectural level because of the difficulties involved with supporting
multiple drivers for the same hardware in Solaris.
