That's certainly a discussion people may wish to have and they are free
to have it here if they wish, as long as it doesn't descend into the
kind of unacceptable posts that we've seen recently. In the past we've
warned people when they overstepped the mark, and generally things have
calmed down. We've continued to do that but some individuals are
ignoring the warnings, so we've taken the next step which is to ban them.
We are between a rock and a hard place - if we do nothing the noise
continues to escalate and the usefulness of the lists to the majority of
subscribers rapidly falls. If we take action we risk being seen as
applying censorship. In the past we've chosen just to warn people, but
as I said that doesn't seem to be working any longer.
I'm pretty certain that the behaviour in question wouldn't be tolerated
on any well-managed list, and on that basis we've chosen to take the
action we have. I'm hoping that we won't have to do so again.
