Odd.  They *shouldn't* be.  Theoretically, anything that doesn't get easier as you get "more worldly" shouldn't be a save, it should be a check. 

What about a strength check for a feat of strength--say, a magical item needs a Str check at DC 5, but you're a plant with no strength score; thus, you automatically fail.

I honestly never heard that, and I think I might go looking for it.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]"> Ken Marable suggested that it's in their for the sake of completeness, and  that someone, somewhere might come up with a use for it.  That seems like  an odd guiding philosophy for the writers of the rules to follow:  "*We*  can't think of any use for this to be here, but maybe someone will, so  we'll put it in even though it doesn't seem to make much sense."  It kind  of makes me suspicious of their motivations for the rules in the rest of  the book. :)
I think it makes sense.  "What happens if someone without an abilty score has to make a check" could be answered by "they never are," but "they always fail" is even better.
