First off, let me say that I am glad to see the creation of the Open Gaming
Foundation. It has been a long time coming. I am writing regarding the
possible formation of a project using the d20 system from WOTC, under the
OGL. But I have a couple of legal questions. Having read through the license
FAQ, it didn't quite answer all of my questions.
A friend of mine, who was a long-time DM for D&D, had developed a
long-running campaign which featured all-original characters and small mods
to the rules. He has recently expressed an interest to me about putting this
campaign together as a single-player adventure for the PC, using the OGL d20
system.
Now, I am a software engineer by trade, so making a d20 engine for the PC
is a fair but finishable challenge for me (I have a dice parser library I
wrote a while back
revved up for this). I would like to release it all under the GNU GPL. Am I
running into
any legal entanglements here with the OGL? Have I asked myself the right (or
enough) questions about adopting d20 for this project?
I would really like to do this, but if the legal ramifications make it
impossible, so be it.
