I am a publisher of games, and have been doing so since 1987.
In that time we've done things that sold well, and things that didn't.
d20 exists as an opportunity for me access a market that might otherwise not
look at content we produce. The inclusion of the "d20" logo on the cover is
supposed to assist in that identifying the product as being compatible with
other materials those players are already using or may already own.
Team Frog is about content. We create IPs. The rules in question frankly
don't matter all that much as nearly anyone can write a set of coherent rules
given time, effort, and playtesting. We already have several different
in-house systems that work just fine.
The reason for us to use d20 is to try and broaden the market for my IPs. If
you have already created stats for a particularly cool Ogre (for example) and
make that OGC, why should I create a new one? You've done the work and made
it available.
All the game stats we include in a product will be OGC. Some we'll make, some
will be taken from the OGC "library" as appropriate. I doubt we'll create a
lot in the way of new rules unless what is already available doesn't do an
adequate job of simulating what we want to portray.
And my IPs will remain closed.
I'll be damned if I can see what is so wrong about this approach.
You folks that are so intent on creating OGC have to realize that others
beyond me will be taking from your work and making money as well. If your
work is so sacred, then *don't* make it OGC. Or make it closed content for
any for-profit purpose. That is your legal right as well.
