Well, in that case, we can expect the "standard" to be high gloss, but 
lousy proofreading?  *grins* 

I think the editing bar, at the very least, can go a lot higher than WotC 
is currently leapin' for.  The DMG was an editing mess, with misaligned 
tables, several poorly-explained sections, a great multitude of changed 
terms that weren't corrected in the final draft (spell and magic item 
names), rules contradictions in multiple areas, and a few things left out 
of the book that should have been picked up by reading and testing 
(mostly notably, how to get cohorts, and the how/if of recharging magic 
items).  It's clearly going to need a second printing like the PH did -- 
that's "need", not "would be nice".  The editing detracts from a product 
that is otherwise excellent in every way, and that's a shame.

The D20 products I've seen so far have a higher editing polish than the 
D&D core products I've bought for 3rd edition, although they definitely 
have less "gloss" polish by a lot.
