So I'm thinking:Even if conversion rules tread close to copyright/TM,
why not allow them? If the business model of open gaming is based on
network effects, then, the more people who use your system, the better
for you, right?
Then it occurs to me:The problem is a lack of mutuality. Suppose, for
example, WOTC decided to be 'nice' and not say anything when Palladium
hypothetically begins putting extensive D&D conversion notes into their
products. A few months later, WOTC releases a D20 Gamma World, and
includes a chapter on converting to/from RIFTS. Palladium decides to
sue. Whether or not the suit is groundless, it will be costly.
The OGC mandates mutuality -- it means that if you copy from me, I have
the right to copy from you. Assuming there is material WORTH copying,
this is a clear benefit.
