I agree, but a larger D&D development community can glut the market with
product, making it harder for GURPS and the other companies to sell their
games.
My main disappointment with Ryan's one-system-scheme is that it means
he will be actively opposed to opening up any of TSR's dead RPGs for
community development. I asked him early on if WOTC would release an
older game like Star Frontiers under the OGL to serve as a proving ground
for the license, and he was unequivocally against it because that would be
one more rules system OGL/D20 needed to drag players away from.
WOTC has a back catalog of games that would be supported by fans and
small press developers if there was an opportunity to do so. Now, though,
the only way that will happen is if the rules are converted to D20.
