Who?

Seriously, folks -- when you start talking about fantasy RPGs pretty much
every generic term has been used once somewhere -- and most have been
used multiple times in similar combinations. If -- when naming a primary
game system or major line -- you try to avoid any similarity to every
title used for a supplement or an adventure... well, I think you'd go
stark raving mad. I'd certainly avoid a line or major system name that
duplicated or even closely resembled a major product still in print or
the major system/line name of something out of print but fairly widely
distributed. But someone having once published an adventure called (for
example) "Land of Dwarves" -- out of print for a long time and obscure to
start with -- would probably not prevent me from creating a game line
called (for example) "Dwarfland".

(Superhero games are almost as bad if not worse, especially since you
have to avoid the term "superhero/super-hero" altogether since it is a
joint trademark of DC and Marvel...)

Do you REALLY think there will be significant confusion between a
brand-new game just being released and a supplement for an obscure RPG
that is fifteen years old? Especially when you are talking about
something as utterly generic as "Lands of Legends"?

On the other hand, there is something to be said for demonstrating your
creativity right up front with the name on the cover.

I do agree, however, that an effort should be made to make a major system
or line name trademarkable if at all possible by using a uniquely created
word or spelling. ("Lejendary Adventures", anyone?)
