related note: i was -->this<-- close to buying the first Diomin book.
then i noticed the section on designation of OGC, and looked through
the book and discovered how much of the book wasn't OGC. i put it
back. now, i'll be perfectly honest: this is a completely irrational
decision, because the thing that first attracted me to the setting
was the paucity of rules-mechanics-type-stuff in their presentation
of the setting, and that's the only stuff that *has* to be Open.
furthermore, it doesn't actually make any differenc to me, because i
wasn't planning on re-using any of the stuff in my own works, so it
wouldn't matter if none of it was Open. i'm not entirely sure why i
decided not to buy it. either it was never "good enough", and i was
enamored of the idea of it being an Open product, or it was "good
enough" and i'm being overly political about this whole open content
thing.
but i can say that i'm pretty much certain that, if it had been 100%
closed, i wouldn't have been disappointed. it's only because it
labels itself as an "open" work (released under the WOGL), but then
turned out to be just barely Open, that i was disappointed. i guess
i feel like there's a certain amount of trading on the cachet of
"Open Content" without actually delivering the goods. which is even
more irrational, since for all i know the folks who wrote it only
used the WOGL because they had to because they were putting in rules
for new races and new magic, and thus they were "forced" to be
"deceitful".
