Could be.  There is a different software thread that was discussing the
other issue, and apparently they cross-pollinated in my mind.

There's the rub.  There are no such LEGAL opinions - the only kind that
carry any weight.  Copyleft has never been tested in court.  That makes it
hard to produce the kind of proof you are asking for.

On the other hand, there is a new thread on the d20 list that addresses the
issue of identification directly in a PDF.  Curiouser and curiouser.
