Would this then not apply to those creatures that you can track down
description for via PD/Myth?  I then create a description from the PD source
(which would be copyright me) and then have illustrations created from that.
I could then release the description as OGC.

This of course wouldn't work for critters created by, or drastically
customized by TSR/WotC.


Thinks like Vampires, Werewolf's, Elf's, Dragons, etc shouldn't be a problem
though.
