I think I must be wrong in bringing up that old rename(2) issue because it
seems to be fixed in modern macOS, and it's got nothing to do with a race
because the rename call returns before it has taken effect, and we need some
kind of sync.
If the opening the freshly renamed files fails because they aren't in place yet
there could be a "lookup1.bin missing" or "plotscr.lst missing" message in
c_debug.txt, but I don't see how that could cause the corruption.
