I believe that is the case for the series fields that we have at the  
moment in OL. If anyone runs into series of type #1, please post the  
URL.

And from Tim's explanation of what LibraryThing does, it begins to  
seem that 'series' is not incompatible with the upcoming 'list'  
function in OL. That will allow users to group books around any  
criteria that they wish. Given that the concept of series is fuzzy,  
and is often only in the eye of the beholder, having series be a user  
list rather than a piece of bibliographic description begins to make  
sense. I do wonder, though, if a series should be a specific *type* of  
list... and if lists will be tag-able so you could tag them as a  
series, as opposed to, say, your list of favorite books.

Another thing that LibraryThing does it that it has a place for users  
to input the names of characters. That makes it fairly easy to find  
some kinds of series where the characters follow through from one book  
to another (which I think is fairly common). The same could be true  
for places ('Discworld').
