In the future there will be a page for each series that we'll list all
the books in that series. Wikipedia has pages for notable book series. I
built a live demo on our development site a few years ago. Sometimes
there can be more than one way to order a series. The obvious order is
writing/publication order. The other common one is the order of time
without a story, which becomes significant when there are prequels involved.
Currently the series field is attached in the database to editions, we
should move it to the work, because all editions of a work should be
part of the same series.
A nice feature to have would be warning the user if they mark something
as book two of a given series and there is already another book two of
that series known to the system.
If we wanted to add series pages to Open Library we would need to think
what the URLs would look like and how to store the data in Open Library.
Search needs to change so we can index pages with different types
without creating one index for each type of page.
