We're certainly thinking more and more about straightforward spam prevention, like, nofollow on external links, or asking people to do captchas at relevant times. The example Alan posted initially is probably the most annoying/prevalent spam type on OL. Since the IP addresses shift often and without pattern, it's very hard to prevent.
