Jessie,
I sure have to second or third you on this. My only
gripe with the way that GM, including Oldsmobile marketed their respective
station wagons was that none of the high performance goodies were available. I
for one would have been one of those who bought say a 442 factory wagon with the
floor shift, bucket seats, performance engine AND performance suspension,
complete with roll/sway bars front AND rear.
Funny thing, if you take say a 1978 thru 1990 full
size Olds wagon, you could not get from GM a rear roll bar. Period. And to top
things off, the rear suspension is wider than sedan so a sedan roll bar is not
wide enough. The "performance" suspension as it came from Olds/GM added only a
big fat front bar so all that did was compound the built in understeer!
At least "hardtop" wagons were available up until
1959 in the Olds lineup
I think that GM, and the other makers missed the
boat so to speak on this one. Same thing for Ford ~ In the early Falcon sedan
you could get the 271 hp 289, but not in the wagon?!?
My two cents ~ David

SUV's drivers
You know what, I gotta speak up about this. Why was the station wagon
deemed uncool? I think that they were cool as hell. I saw a Vista wagon at a
car show that ran low 11's in the quarter, and then he could drive home from
the strip and pick up the grocerys. They were a hell of alot more roomy than a
SUV not to mention stable i.e. lower to the ground so they handle a hellva lot
better. What irratates me to no end, is when I am trying to look down the road
to turn left or right and then an SUV will pull up next to me completly
blocking my entire field of vision. The damn things are like rolling
billboards. What good is an SUV anyways? Let me count the ways in which they
are pointless. 1- Not as much room as a truck so you can't haul stuff larger
than a few groceries. 2- They are gas hungry like a truck so they aren't as
good as a car . 3- They are easier to tip over in a sharp turn than a
car. 4- They are still built somewhat like a car so you can't really use them
as 4x4 to go cross country. So what the hell are peoples attraction with
em? They aren't a car. They aren't a truck. The're pointless as
either one. My two cents. Thank you.
Jesse.

The
article seems right-on to me! I can't tell you how many times I've nearly
been sideswiped in the '78 98 (bright blue!) and the '88 Town Car...by
SUV's. If you can't see cars THIS big, then you shouldn't be driving.
And I always make it a point to stay out of others' blind spots. Worse is
the headlights that blind you. I end up adjusting the power mirrors
on the side to put it right back in their faces...one day will
probably get me killed by an aggressor.
I am amazed at the gas
station to see how much these people are paying...and taking too much gas
for themselves. But that's another topic. Funny that it is (as article
says) the environmentalist/tree-huggers who mostly drive these things
which is completely opposite of their 'beliefs'.
Hopefully, the
SUV will get low to the ground and be safer/less heavy...like a station
wagon. More and more of the cross-overs look like wagons!
Station wagons had so much room and were comfy to drive, but somehow
they were deemed 'uncool'. I'm betting they'll make a
comeback.
